2024 Highlight: Oklahoma

Why Oklahoma?

During my last years of high school in Athens, Greece I had the good fortune of participating in the production of the "Oklahoma!" musical at Athens College, the US endowed Boys High School and my father’s Alma Mater. It was a spectacular production with a live student band. I delighted in the whole experience and Oklahoma was branded on me, as it turns out, for life.

When I graduated from Columbia Journalism in 1967 I made New York my home. Last year, I came across Ken Burns’ American Buffalo. My jaw dropped at the man-made destruction orchestrated in the central US, with the fate of the Native American tribes and the Buffalo at its center. I knew nothing about it!! My heart ached and I started investigating and painting a series of Buffaloes as a tribute to their majesty and the cruel human attempt to exterminate it thereby also causing the first man made ecological disaster with the advent of the dust bowl.

Recently, during a conversation with a friend at a reception at Columbia, I mentioned my obsession with the Buffalo and she said: “If you want to see the Buffalo you should go to Oklahoma.” OKLAHOMA! My whole being came alive upon the mention of Oklahoma. That one word became the nexus of my 16 year old innocent self square dancing and singing on stage and my recent knowledge of what actually happened there, opening a new chapter in my life’s investigations.
